Flu Vaccination...
By Cara Adler
The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has published its recommendations for influenza vaccination for the 2013–2014 season in MMWR.
For the first time, both trivalent and quadrivalent vaccines will be available. Trivalent formulations include an H1N1-like A virus, an H3N2-like A virus, and a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus. Quadrivalent formulations also include a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.
Since last year, the CDC has licensed six new flu vaccines (see link below). One of the new vaccines, a recombinant hemagglutinin formulation (RIV3; FluBlok), is an egg-free product and is an option for individuals aged 18 to 49 with egg allergy.

One retrospective analysis
of data from managed-care organizations collected during 1996–2000 estimated that the risk during influenza season
among persons aged ≥65 years with high-risk underlying medical conditions was approximately 560 influenza-associated hospitalizations per 100,000 persons compared with approximately 190 per 100,000 among lower risk persons in this age group. Persons aged 50 through 64 years who have
underlying medical conditions also were at substantially increased risk for hospitalization during influenza season
compared with healthy adults aged 50 through 64 years (26). |
