This idea surfaces from time to time in MS research: that one reason MS seems more prevalent in the developed countries could be that the developed countries have a greater emphasis on hygiene. Here is a new variant of the theory, though MS isn't specifically mentioned:

Clean living is not necessarily healthy living, suggests a comparison study of rats living in clean labs and in the wild.

Rats and mice living in sewers and farms seem to have healthier immune systems than those living in controlled, squeaky clean laboratory environments. according to two new studies. Researchers say this supports the hygiene hypothesis that people's immune systems aren't being challenged by disease and dirt early in life causing the body's natural defenses to overreact to small irritants.
