Industry Gifts and Payments to Doctors to Become More Transparent
By Kelly Young
Beginning this month, drug and medical device manufacturers will be required to document transactions with individual physicians, such as meals and fees for speaking engagements, in compliance with the Sunshine Act, the Wall Street Journal [August 22] reports. By September 2014, this information will be posted on a searchable public website.
Some states and some pharmaceutical companies already post this information, but the Sunshine Act, part of the healthcare overhaul, is expected to draw increased public attention and broaden the scope because it applies to any company that makes products covered by Medicare.
One physician told the Journal that he believes the program will cause some physicians to decline paid speaking engagements because of the negative public perception.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recommends that physicians keep their own records of industry payments and transfers. Doctors will be able to review data from manufacturers and make corrections before they are posted online.

So doctors might decline paid speaking engagements now. Would that be so bad? Many doctors have such an overloaded schedule that a patient might wait months for an appointment. If doctors spent less time and energy being public speakers (not really what they're trained for, is it?), patients would probably benefit more than we're benefiting from attending lectures by doctors. |
