Increasing levels of dietary salt are associated with increasing production of inflammatory factors linked to the development of autoimmune diseases, according to a Nature study.

Researchers subjected human CD4+ cells in culture to increasing concentrations of NaCl. The salt produced dose-dependent increases in the number of cells producing the inflammatory mediator interleukin-17, which has been linked to multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and other autoimmune conditions.

The scientists then tested increased dietary salt intake in mice, which showed similar results.
